Introduction
The processing of crude oil inrefineries and petrochemical plants
creates waste watercontaining hydrocarbons.Before this waste water
goes to the sewage treatment plant,a floating layer is separated by
static oil separators. This layer,commonly called slop oil,contains
hydrocarbons, solids,and water. Slop oil normallyappears as an
emulsion that is not easily breakable. When the slop oil contains
resins, tar,and surfactants, separation becomes very difficult.In a
static settler, such an emulsion may take up to several hundred
hours to separate into its components if at all. FLOTTWEG can
provide complete separation systems for any type of slop oil.
For effective separation, the pre-treatment of slop oil is
critical. Heating the oil reduces its viscosity. The addition of
chemical emulsion breakers /demulsifiers helps to improve
separation. At the core of our slop oil separation systems is a
FLOTTWEG TRICANTER
which separates slop oil into three components consisting of oil,
water, and solids. In general, the solids released from the
emulsion are fine-grained. If necessary, a polymer flocculant or
chemicals can be added directly into the feed of the tricanter to
improve the separation.
